Ingredients

  • 1 Tbsp butter
  • 1 tsp olive oil
  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • 1/3 green bell pepper finely minced
  • 1/2 large yellow onion finely minced
  • 4 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 Tbsp. tomato paste
  • 2/3 cup ketchup
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1 Tbsp. brown sugar
  • 1 tsp. yellow mustard
  • 3/4 tsp. chili powder
  • 1/2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/2 tsp. kosher salt
  • 1/4 tsp. red pepper flakes
  • 1/4. tsp black pepper
  • dash of hot sauce

Instructions

  • In a large skillet, heat butter and oil over medium high heat. Once hot, add the ground beef and cook until browned, making sure to break the meat apart into small pieces as it cooks, about 8-10 minutes. Transfer the meat to a colander and drain well.
  • In the same skillet, add the onion and bell pepper and cook until soft, approximately 5 minutes. Add garlic and cook until fragrant, about 30 seconds or so. Add the ground beef back to the skillet and add tomato paste. Stir well.
  • Add the ketchup, water, brown sugar, mustard, chili powder, Worcestershire sauce, salt, red pepper flakes and black pepper. Stir well to combine.
  • Continue cooking over medium heat for 10-15 minutes, until mixture has thickened. Remove from heat and serve over your favorite toasted buns.
